31 dicembre Exceed expectationI have been a frequent customer of Haigh's since I work in Melbourne. Haigh's is one of the best chocolate brands in Australia. As I will go to my friend's place for new year eve, you know it is improper to go to someone's home just with two bunches of bananas during this holiday season, I decided to buy a box of chocolate.
It is bloody hot in Melbourne today, 42 degree. When I passed the box to the shop assistant, she put it into a foil bag before putting into a paper bag, which I didn't expect. She said that she had better do so otherwise the chocolate would be melted in such a hot day. While I got my receipt, some more words than usual appeared on it, "During hot weather avoid leaving chocolate in a parked car and store away from heat and light." What a fantastic shopping experience to finish the last 2007 working day in the city!
Having been working in service industries for more than seven years, I hear "exceed clients' expectation" almost every single day. Today's experience in Haigh's is like a free cold drink in this extremely hot day!

The facilitator used the Chinese translation of "crisis" to explain this. Apparently, my colleagues wouldn't understand what "危机" is. However, when the facilitator translated it into English again literally, I was shocked. It became "danger/threat" and "opportunity"! I have spoken Chinese for nearly 30 years and I have never realised that, which means that if we can handle a crisis well, there is an opportunity for us! 04 dicembre Do we do everything for a reasonWhen I was leaning against my desk, looking at the blue sea through the window of 25th floor of the office, suddenly I could not help asking myself such a question, "Why am I here?"
We are encourged to ask not only what but also why. However, do we do everything for a reason? Do we need a reason for what we have done, or are going to do? For some, we may need a reason. But for others, we may not. On the other hand, even though we come up a reason for that, so what? We may have a reason for the short term, or we may think it is not worth doing something. Do we ever think about the long term? Yet we have missed so many in our lives, so don't ask why if you can, just do it and enjoy it.
My colleagues were discussing whether an accounting degree or a finance degree was more interesting. I realised that I had done both! Both of them were quite helpful in my opinion. I also remember that I have two accounting qualifications, and I am doing a third one! Without them, I can not be who I am today. However, sometimes I ask myself, "What else could I have done in the past 5 years if I had not done what I did? Who else could I have been?" Yet I would not be myself if I had not done those. People often say "be myself/yourself". Then I come up with further questions, "What is 'myself'? Am I not myself if I do something I usually don't do?"
I don't know the answers to these questions. All I know is everyone is unique, the only thing we have in common is that we are different. 01 dicembre 南十字下狂想曲之八－联邦大选澳洲联邦大选沸沸扬扬闹了几个月，终于以反对党工党大胜而结束。
因为候任总理陆克文说得一口流利的中文（其实口音还是很重，比起大山、朱利安等人差得远了），还招了个华裔女婿，中国的媒体也来劲了，差不多就像选了一个华人当澳洲总理一般，至少也像中国在澳洲有了代言人。其实偶觉得这也未免太天真了。
一来，陆克文曾经任驻华外交官，中文是他工作需要。而且澳洲现在和中国贸易比重越来越大，和胡总说中文也不过是利之所在，并不代表他就一定对中国友好，政客永远是要讨好选民的，况且中国通之中，反华人士多如牛毛。即使小陆个人对中国友好，也绝不可能代表中国的利益办事，政府首脑处事，当然是以本国国家利益为上。国际上没有永远的朋友，只有永远的利益，这是一条不变的原则。偶们的老江总，英语和俄语说得多好，难道有人会说江总是英俄在华的代言人么？！
二来，小陆招了一个华裔女婿，也不足为奇。澳洲本来就是一个移民国家，什么种族的人都有。更重要的是，那些ABC们，很多人其实在文化及生活习惯上和白种人区别已经不大了（这也是华人社会的悲哀）。
话说回来，虽然偶还没有选举权，偶倒是挺支持工党的。老霍、Peter Costello、Alexander Downer这三架马车占据澳洲政坛长达11年之久，就算他们表现一直可圈可点，也很难相信他们还会有什么新主张。相反工党在环境保护、教育、网络等方面的政纲听上去都不错，而且想得长远，假如政府不为国家的未来20年作长远打算的话，还会有谁来做这个事情？当然他们能否真正实施这些政纲是另一个问题，不过如果连一个听上去很美的政纲都没有，又怎么能让选民投票呢？
另外，个人觉得小陆的亲和力比Costello要强得多，而且属于“天庭饱满、地阁方圆”的面相，睇相佬话斋，贵不可言。Costello样子则过于严肃。以貌取人固然不对，然而政治人物代表的是一个国家，个人形象及风度是很重要的，特别是对大国而言，要是像某新贵那样，形容猥琐，“尖眉突额、无厘贵格”，真是不知如何代表大国形象出现在国际社会。 |
